The American duo Sam Burns and Max Greyserman were about to start the third round of the PGA Championship at 08.15 local time when the signal horn sounded over Quail Hollow, North Carolina.
People on the golf course were urged to take shelter or leave the area due to hazardous weather – thunderstorms and lightning – that was approaching.
Shortly afterwards, the message came that the first start would be delayed by nearly three and a half hours. Instead of the players going out in twosomes, there will be three players in each group and the start will take place from both hole 1 and 10.
Saturday's first shot will now take place at 17.43 Swedish time, and just over two hours later, the last players will have teed off.
Alex Norén, who is tied for 17th place on –3 overall, will tee off at 18.38. The tournament's second Swede Ludvig Åberg missed the qualifying limit and will not play this weekend.
Jhonattan Vegas leads on eight strokes under par.
