The broad S&P 500 index rose 0.6 percent to a new record high, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 0.3 percent and the tech-heavy Nasdaq composite index rose 1.3 percent.

Friday's figures from the US Department of Labor show that the number of jobs outside the agricultural sector in the US fell by 23,000 in July. This was a significantly weaker result than expected, which may lead members of the US Federal Reserve to postpone further interest rate hikes.

One dollar is traded for 9.48 kronor.
