None of the top players are left in the tournament. First, the top-seeded Russian Andrej Rubljov was eliminated by Stan Wawrinka, Switzerland, and then Casper Ruud, eighth in the world, was knocked out by Tallon Griekspoor, ranked 37th.
The Dutchman won with 7–5, 7–6 (7–5).
It was a tough match, Casper is top-ten ranked for a reason and I've lost to him the last two times, says Griekspoor to SVT.
I'm very pleased with the win and my game. I served incredibly well when it mattered most.
In Saturday's semifinal, Griekspoor will face Grigor Dimitrov. The third-seeded Bulgarian beat out Swiss Dominic Stricker with 6–3, 6–2.
The 39-year-old Stan Wawrinka had his career peak ten years ago. But he can still play good tennis and won at the Royal Tennis Hall over top-seeded Russian Andrej Rubljov.
The Swiss Stan Wawrinka, now ranked 217 in the world, won the quarterfinal with 7–6 (7–5), 7–6 (7–5).
It's fantastic. I played at a high level. He plays fast so I tried to play aggressively and it was a fantastic atmosphere. I'm really pleased, says Wawrinka to SVT.
Rubljov, seventh in the ranking, had several outbursts of rage.
You have to see it as positive, you're doing something right on the court. It's always better that the opponent gets frustrated than you do, says Wawrinka.
Wawrinka is trained by Magnus Norman. He was ranked third in the world ten years ago and took three Grand Slam titles in 2014–2016.
In Saturday's semifinal, American Tommy Paul awaits.
