The country's Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock warns in an interview with Bild am Sonntag that Syrians who have been loyal to the ousted Assad regime will be brought to justice if they seek to enter Germany.
We will hold all the regime's henchmen accountable for their heinous crimes. If they try to flee to Germany, they should know that there is hardly any other country that will act as tough as Germany, she says.
Germany is the country in Europe that has received the most Syrian war refugees and has previously punished several supporters of the Assad regime. In January 2022, a colonel in the Syrian army, Anwar Raslan, was sentenced to life imprisonment for torture crimes committed in Syrian prisons. Another person, the doctor Alaa Moussa, is on trial in Frankfurt, charged with, among other things, torture and murder in connection with his work at a military hospital.
