A new control system to combat illegal fishing, introduced at the turn of the year, has created major problems in European ports, the Financial Times reports.

Seven EU countries - including Italy and Estonia - have branded the system unmanageable at a fisheries meeting in Brussels. And the industry is now demanding that its implementation be paused or postponed; otherwise supply disruptions and fish shortages could occur.

An importer tells the newspaper that a dozen containers of fish are stuck in Rotterdam. The responsible authorities are reportedly not answering questions about why the catches are stuck.

An industry employee states that the system is missing codes for countries and fish species, while the amount of data that can be entered per catch is too small.
