Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot specifically addresses the murder of Mehdi Kessaci, the brother of a well-known anti-drug activist in Marseille, when he urges the EU to act.
The idea is to impose entry bans, freeze accounts in the EU and prohibit financial contacts with people considered responsible for smuggling drugs, people or weapons.
"These sanctions would make it possible to hit where it hurts them most – in their wallets – to eradicate the evil at its source. I hope that this system, which I am presenting here today, can be approved as soon as possible," says Barrot on his way to Thursday's EU foreign ministers' meeting in Brussels.
