Every year, a handful of players are awarded prizes for their efforts during the season. The Calder Trophy, the award for the rookie of the year, is voted on by journalists, and this year it could very well go to a Swedish player.
According to nhl.com'ssurvey, Jesper Wallstedt would receive 50 points if the vote were held now and is thus second on the list.
Wallstedt was named Rookie of the Month in November after a save percentage of almost 97 percent in six games that month. Midway through the season, his save percentage is almost 93 percent.
However, he is a step away from taking the top spot from the Islanders' Matthew Schaefer. The 18-year-old defenseman has 78 points, according to the survey.
Wallstedt is also seventh on the list of possible recipients for the Vezina Trophy, the goaltender of the year award, and has been selected for Sweden's Olympic squad.
