At the close, the broad S&P 500 index had risen 1.5 percent, the Dow Jones industrial average jumped 0.6 percent, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq composite index rose 2.3 percent.
Among the big winners were several companies connected to the AI sector - Intel rose by just over 12 percent, Advanced Micro Devices gained 10 percent, while Qualcomm gained more than 9 percent.
One factor that the stock market took note of was the oil price, which had fallen back slightly. At 10 p.m., a barrel of North Sea oil cost around $100.
In parallel with this, US market interest rates fell after having risen sharply recently.
