At the close, the broad S&P 500 index had fallen 0.2 percent, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index fell 0.7 percent and the Dow Jones Industrial Average was unchanged.
The chip sector had a tough day, with Micron and Sandisk, among others, losing just over 10 percent each.
Things were much happier at Facebook and Instagram parent company Meta, whose new investment in cloud services, among other things, sent the stock up 8.8 percent.
The price of oil has fallen slightly over the past 24 hours. At 10 p.m., North Sea oil cost around $71 per barrel.
