Interest rates on US government bonds of all maturities have been rising for a long time, putting pressure on the stock market.

On Tuesday, however, they turned sharply lower - a major factor behind the upbeat opening on the New York stock market.

After a few minutes of trading, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.4 percent, the broad S&P 500 index was up 0.5 percent and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index was up 0.6 percent.

The Nasdaq closed at a record high on Monday.
