Wall Street rises as oil prices fall, while Apple slips ahead of earnings report

The trading week has started on an upswing on the New York Stock Exchange, driven by falling oil prices. Apple, the world’s most valuable listed company, is down ahead of its quarterly report this evening.

After about a quarter of a day’s trading, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.9 percent, the S&P 500 0.6 percent and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite 0.9 percent.

Hopes for peace talks between the United States and Iran have been renewed, and oil futures prices are falling.

A barrel of North Sea Brent crude was trading at $106.63, down 6 percent on the day. US WTI crude was down 6.3 percent at $97.52.

Apple, the world’s most valuable listed company, was down 1 percent ahead of its earnings report, due after the market closes at 10 p.m. Swedish time.
