At the close, the broad S&P500 index had risen by 0.8 percent, while the technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index increased by 1.5 percent and the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.3 percent.
Among the winners were several tech stocks - including Intel, which rose about 6 percent, and Advanced Micro Devices, up just over 7 percent. It was also a good day for chip giant Nvidia, whose shares climbed 2.6 percent.
Movements in the oil market have been relatively small. At 10 p.m., a barrel of North Sea oil cost just over $73.
