Clouds of concern loomed in the form of runaway government debt, inflation and continued rises in government bond yields and oil prices.

Still, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.2 percent, the broad S&P 500 index rose 0.7 percent and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite rose 1.1 percent.

Nasdaq thus closed at a new record high.

The stock market was boosted by gains among five of the seven major technology companies collectively known as the "Magnificent Seven" - all among the world's eleven most valuable listed companies. Of the seven, only Amazon and Apple fell.

Share prices are supported by, among other things, strong corporate earnings, consumer spending and huge AI-related investments.

"What's encouraging is that the strength is not a fluke. We're seeing a healthy combination of growth and increased margins," said Mark Hackett, chief strategist at research firm Nationwide.
