The Dow Jones Industrial Average and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index rose by 0.5 and 0.8 percent, respectively.
The broad S&P 500 index advanced 0.7 percent, closing at a new record high.
The rise comes after Friday's jobs report, which showed that nonfarm payrolls increased by 50,000 in the United States in December. Analysts had expected 70,000 new jobs, but the unemployment rate fell from 4.5 to 4.4 percent - which analysts interpret as a good sign for the economy.
