At the close, the Dow Jones industrial average had fallen 0.9 percent, the broad-based S&P 500 lost 0.3 percent, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq composite index rose 0.2 percent.
Earlier on Wednesday, new statistics were published showing that core inflation, the so-called PCE measure, fell to 3.4 percent, which was lower than the expected 3.7 percent.
However, this had no cooling effect on US market interest rates. By 10 p.m., the yield on 10-year US Treasury bonds had climbed to 5.3 percent.
