When the New York Stock Exchange closed, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.5 percent, the broad S&P 500 had moved sideways and the technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index had fallen just under 0.2 percent.

The recent pause in fighting and reports of peace talks between the US and Iran have affected oil prices, which have plunged 9 percent. A barrel of North Sea oil (Brent) now costs around $88, compared with last week when the price was over $100 a barrel.

As oil prices fall, US AI companies are being pressured by concerns about Chinese competitors. Chip giant Nvidia fell nearly 5 percent.
