Wall Street's Dow Jones industrial average closed up 1 percent. The tech-heavy Nasdaq closed down 0.2 percent. The broad-based S&P 500 rose 0.2 percent.
Investors sold chipmakers in favour of more economically sensitive industries during the trading day, Bloomberg reports. Micron fell 8.9 percent, AMD 8.2 percent. Giant Nvidia recovered slightly and closed up 0.3 percent.
The price of a barrel of North Sea oil (Brent) fell 5 percent to just under $84.
