The Dow Jones industrial average fell 0.8 percent, the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index fell 0.6 percent and the broad S&P 500 Index retreated 0.5 percent.

A major factor is the price of oil, which has risen as a result of the ongoing war in Iran. At the close, a barrel of North Sea oil cost just over $101.

During the trading day, the yield on 10-year US Treasury bonds also reached its highest level since 2023, according to Bloomberg.
