About an hour after the opening, the Dow Jones industrial average had fallen 0.2 percent, but the broad S&P 500 index had risen 0.5 percent and the technology-heavy Nasdaq was up 1.1 percent.
Semiconductor companies Western Digital and AMD have had a very good start to the week, with gains of 10.7 and 9.7 percent, respectively.
Industry peer Marvell Technology is up 5.3 percent.
