At the close, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.5 percent, the broad-based S&P 500 rose 0.1 percent and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index fell 0.6 percent.

Among the gainers was Apple, which rose 3.5 percent.

Intel, which beat expectations in its quarterly report on Thursday, traded lower, falling 7.9 percent. Other chipmakers followed the same trend, with Broadcom, for example, losing 2.7 percent.

The conflict with Iran continued, with attacks from both Iran and the US. Despite this, the price of North Sea oil (Brent) had fallen to around $96.70 per barrel at 10 p.m., compared with Thursday's peak of $102.
