At the close, the Dow Jones Industrial Average had risen 0.1 percent, the broad S&P 500 index 0.3 percent, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index 0.4 percent.
Chipmaker Nvidia - the world's most valuable listed company - rose around 6 percent after announcing a new chip for personal computers.
Earlier on Monday, Iranian state-controlled media reported that Tehran had suspended negotiations with the United States.
In the wake of this, the price of a barrel of North Sea oil (Brent) rose sharply and was around $95 per barrel at 10 p.m.
