The incident occurred between Kaisepakte and Stordalen, southeast of Abisko, in connection with a switch and at low speed.
Overnight, personnel from the Swedish Transport Administration were on site and made an initial assessment of the damage.
"A first estimate is that there will be approximately 20-25 sleepers, a switch and broken rails," says Anna Lindahl, head of the maintenance unit for the northern region, in a press release.
There is no forecast for when traffic on the route can resume.
It is mainly freight trains that are affected by the stop, but SJ has canceled three departures: one from Narvik to Luleå and one from Luleå to Narvik on Sunday, and the departure between Boden and Narvik on Monday.
