The incident occurred between Kaisepakte and Stordalen, southeast of Abisko, during a shunting operation at low speed.
Overnight, personnel from the Swedish Transport Administration were on site and made an initial assessment of the damage.
"A first estimate is that there are approximately 20-25 sleepers, a switch and broken rails," says Anna Lindahl, head of unit maintenance for the northern region, in a press release.
Mainly freight traffic is affected by the stoppage, and there is currently no forecast for when traffic can resume.
