The European Commission President von der Leyen writes on X that the phone call was "good" and that the EU is ready to discuss an agreement.

But, she warns, "to get a good agreement, we would need to be on our side by July 9th."

This is the date that Trump previously set as the deadline for the tariff pause on the 20-percent punitive tariffs that he introduced on all EU goods with a presidential order on April 2. During the pause, the US tariffs on all EU goods are percent.

On Friday, however, he threatened to introduce 50-percent tariffs on goods from the EU as of June 1st – and stated that he "does not seek a settlement" with the EU on the issue of trade tariffs.

The EU's Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic stated that trade between the EU and the US must "be built on mutual respect, not threats. We are ready to defend our interests".
