Among the models affected are the Golf, Tiguan, Touran and Caddy manufactured between 2013 and 2024, according to Auto Motor und Sport. In Germany, this concerns around 900,000 vehicles, and just over 2.1 million globally.
Of the 51,000 vehicles covered in Sweden, approximately 45,000 are Volkswagen passenger cars, 3,700 Audis and 2,000 Seats.
"The recall applies to vehicles where a component in the steering system's mount can in some cases corrode over time, which in the worst case can affect steering ability," Volkswagen Sweden communications manager Marcus Thomasfolk writes in an email to TT.
Affected car owners in Sweden will be contacted and the cars will be repaired free of charge as a preventive measure at an authorized workshop.
