Hundreds of cars have been stuck in long queues on the E22 due to the snowstorm overnight into Saturday. A VMA - an important message to the public - was issued. The worst queues are gone, Håkan Andersson, an alarm and line operator, said at 05:00.

They are currently driving the route to see if there are any more people stuck before they are prepared to open the road, he said.

The VMA was announced in Högsbo, Mönsterås and Oskarshamn municipalities. People were urged to stay off the roads.

Initially, there was a queue from north of Mönsterås almost past Påskallavik, a distance of around 15 kilometers. Approximately 400 cars and trucks were reported stuck in the queues.

The Swedish Transport Administration chose to close the E22 completely between Oskarshamn and the Ålem Norra interchange just after 1 a.m. on Saturday.

It's an extreme situation where it's just getting snowier. You absolutely shouldn't be on the roads unless it's absolutely necessary, Magnus Alm from the Swedish Transport Administration told Aftonbladet earlier in the night.

Those who set out on the roads need to be prepared to stay warm and bring drinks and food for at least 24 hours if they are stopped, according to the Swedish Transport Administration.
