Scholz has been criticized since he initiated a phone call with Russia's President Vladimir Putin last week. Now, he announces that Germany "will remain" Ukraine's main pillar in Europe.
On site in Kyiv, Scholz says that Russia cannot be allowed to "dictate peace in Ukraine" in negotiations, but rather that no decisions on peace can be made without Ukraine in order to achieve a "just and lasting peace".
"Putin wants people to freeze"
The Chancellor also condemns attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure.
Russia continues to target Ukraine's energy infrastructure in a deliberate and ruthless manner, says Scholz, adding that Putin wants "people to freeze".
Earlier, he announced that the Ukrainian defense would receive another German military support package worth 650 million euros (approximately 7.5 billion kronor). This will be delivered in December, according to the Chancellor.
During a press conference alongside Scholz, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyj says that he is still discussing with the Chancellor the possibility of sending long-range Taurus missiles to use on Russian territory.
Baerbock in China
Zelenskyj says that he constantly works to ensure that a more common view on the issue is found.
Germany's Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock is visiting China and announces that she has discussed the Ukraine war. In a meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Baerbock is said to have made it clear that "increasing Chinese support for Russia's war against Ukraine" will affect the relationship between Germany and China.
China presents itself as neutral in the war, but has strong political and economic ties to Russia that are being further strengthened. NATO members accuse the country of actively enabling Russia's warfare.
