"Our rule is that if a song is mainly AI-generated, it does not have the right to be on the top list," says Ludvig Werner, CEO of the industry organization Ifpi, in the newsletter Musikindustrin.
"Jag vet, du är inte min" is the biggest Swedish hit song of the new year with five million streams on Spotify. But the credited artist does not exist and the song was partly created by AI. Journalist Emanuel Karlsten recently revealed that employees of a Danish record label are behind the production.
Spotify allows the song on its service, but it is not allowed to be included in the music industry's official Swedish top chart, where it would likely have been at the top. AI development has progressed rapidly in the music industry, and many musicians are strongly opposed to the technology while others welcome it. Ifpi says they may have to rethink.
"But we are humbled that we have to review and clarify our rules. It is not an easy line to draw, and it is not easy to guard the line afterwards either," says Ludvig Werner.
