Violent Protests Erupt in Albania’s Tirana as Prime Minister Edi Rama Rejects Calls to Resign

Violent protests erupted on Sunday in the Albanian capital, Tirana. Riot police responded with tear gas. Prime Minister Edi Rama rejected all calls for his resignation.

Protests in Albania entered their sixth day on Sunday, with government buildings attacked and waves of anti-government demonstrations followed by riots and the destruction of banks and shops.

The unrest in Albania began with student protests against, among other things, the country's education system.

The students have since joined forces with various anti-government groups to protest a range of social issues. A construction project involving US President Donald Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, is drawing particular anger.

But Prime Minister Edi Rama of the Socialist Party said in a video recording on Sunday that "external forces" are behind the protests - and that he does not intend to resign.
