The airport in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius has suspended all takeoffs and landings following an alarm that balloons may have been moving towards the airport.

“According to initial information, the decision to impose airspace restrictions was influenced by navigation signatures characteristic of balloons,” the airport wrote in a post on its Facebook page .

The temporary stop came into effect at 6 p.m. local time and will continue throughout the evening.

On Thursday, Lithuania closed its border with Belarus after balloons from Belarus repeatedly violated Lithuanian airspace and, among other things, forced the airport in Vilnius to close.

In the future, the balloons will be shot down, announced Prime Minister Inga Ruginiene.

Lithuania has also leveled accusations against Russia, which they believe is behind the "hybrid psychological operations."

Lithuania does not rule out invoking NATO's Article 4 in response to the balloons, Ruginiene said at the time. Article 4 states that members of the defense alliance must consult urgently when a member state feels threatened.
