The decision was made during the party's congress in Budapest on Saturday, reports the Hungarian news agency MTI.

62-year-old Orbán stepped down from the post of prime minister in May - after 16 years in power - after losing the election to Péter Magyar in April.

But Orbán still has strong support from his party, with 729 of the 737 congress delegates voting to let him continue as chairman.
