Viktor Gyökeres Leads Sporting Lisbon to Portuguese League Title

The Swedish goal king Viktor Gyökeres scored his 39th hit in the league and his Sporting Lisbon became champions in Portugal again. Where will the 26-year-old play next season? No one can predict, says the attacker after the title was secured via 2–0 at home against Vitória.

With his 39 league goals, Viktor Gyökeres won the top scorer title overwhelmingly for the second year in a row – the closest competitor is 20 goals.

Last season, he scored 29 goals in the league for the Swede, who constantly has to live with speculations about moving to a bigger club in a better league in Europe.

It's football and you never know what happens. I'm still here, no one can predict the future, we'll see, says Gyökeres to Sport TV according to the news agency AFP.

Fantastic Support

He was happy that Sporting Lissabon managed to defend their league title from last year.

(The title defense) means everything. It was what we wanted and all the support we've received is fantastic, says Gyökeres.

Everything boiled down to Saturday's last round of the Portuguese top football league – would the title go to Sporting or Benfica?

Both clubs stood on the same number of points, but Sporting had an advantage before the decisive match thanks to a win and a draw against Benfica during the season. In case of equal points, the results in the head-to-head matches decide.

Meet in the Cup Final

Sporting didn't need to use that advantage. The team won at home against Vitória after Gyökeres had secured the win to 2–0 in the 82nd minute.

At the same time, Benfica had to settle for 1–1 away against Sporting Braga, which means that Sporting Lissabon wins the league with a two-point margin.

Next Sunday, Sporting and Benfica will meet in the domestic cup final.

We're not in the final just to participate – we want to win. But now we want to celebrate the league title, says Viktor Gyökeres, who this season has scored a total of 53 goals in 51 matches in all competitions.
