Gyökeres made 54 goals and provided 13 goal-scoring passes in 52 matches for Sporting Lissabon last season. This made him the winner of the Gerd Müller prize as the continent's foremost goal scorer.

The striker also scored nine goals in the national team jersey in the Nations League during the autumn of 2024. He becomes the fifth player to win the Gerd Müller prize on the men's side. Robert Lewandowski (2), Erling Braut Haaland, Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappé are his predecessors.
