The middle-distance swimmer from Nässjö had a tough championship and missed the finals in both the 800 and 1,500-metre freestyle.
Finishing with a place in the final of the 400-metre freestyle was a step in the right direction. Johansson's time of 3:47.19 was a second slower than in the heats and almost 2.5 seconds off his Swedish record.
Of course the results are not where I want them to be, but that's life sometimes. I think everyone has a phase like this, says Victor Johansson, who was fourth in the 400-metre freestyle at the World Championships just a year ago.
Léon Marchand took a dominant victory with a time of 3:43.14. The big surprise, however, was 16-year-old Hungarian Oliver Papai, who took silver in 3:44.46.
I didn't know he was 16. Great fun. Stars like that appear everywhere, Sarah (Sjöström) was 14 when she won the European Championship gold medal. Even if you get older and wiser, you can learn something from the younger ones too, says the 27-year-old.
With a Swedish record by a few tenths, Johansson would have been in the medal race. He doesn't know what went wrong in the build-up, but it will be analysed.
I think we have found what works for me, what was missing was this last week. So we have to compare what went wrong compared to the World Championships last year and the Short Course European Championships in Poland last winter, he says.
The plan for the autumn for Johansson is to swim in the Short Course World Championships in China in December.
