In March, Victor Hedman took a break from ice hockey.
"Over the past few months, I have made the decision to step aside and focus on my mental health. It was not an easy decision, but it was the right one," he said in a statement through his Tampa Bay club.
"I've always believed that leadership is about doing what's best for the team. In this case, that also meant doing what was required to take care of myself, so that I can be the best player, teammate, husband and father I expect to be."
Hedman was assistant team captain for Tre Kronor at the Milan Olympics.
It is still unclear when he will be back in action.
Tampa Bay has been eliminated from the Stanley Cup playoffs.
