Earlier on Thursday, it became clear that Viaplay would lose the Swedish rights to the largest club tournament after next season.
Disney+ will take over from fall 2027 through spring 2031.
"Now we can offer the best in European football. We are very happy about that. It's a year away, but it's a big day for us," says Disney's Nordic head, Hans van Rijn, to TT.
"Consider"
We will now plan around these rights - in terms of production, content and the value it will create for customers when they get access to these fantastic tournaments and European matches, he continues.
Currently, the base price for Disney's cheapest subscription is 69 kronor per month - the most expensive is 159 kronor per month. How the acquisition of the Champions League will affect prices is unclear.
"We're not commenting on prices or content right now. We have a year to plan," he says.
Our packaging is a little different from everyone else. We have three packages: one with commercials, one without commercials and one for the whole family with multiple streams. That's what we're doing right now. Now we've got these rights and then we'll think about how it should fit into the packages we have.
The American company took a step into the world of sports in Sweden when the rights to the Europa League and Conference League - the two other men's club football tournaments in Europe - were secured ahead of the 2024–2025 season.
Does not rule out more sports
There is one season left in that agreement, but Disney has now extended the rights to these tournaments through the 2030–2031 season. Disney also previously held the rights to the Women's Champions League in Europe.
Disney has also launched the sports channel ESPN in Europe on its platform, but apart from those football tournaments, Swedish viewers can only watch college basketball.
The Swedish rights to NHL ice hockey and NBA basketball are currently owned by other companies, but it is not ruled out that Disney will also bid there in the future.
"We look at rights in general," says Hans van Rijn.
