Max Verstappen and the Red Bull team now have a firm grip on a fourth consecutive World Championship title. Instead of Briton Lando Norris, McLaren, taking in points, the Dutchman extended his lead in the overall standings.
With three races left in the season – Las Vegas, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi – Verstappen has 393 points, 62 points more than second-placed Norris. A win gives 25 points.
Verstappen failed during Sunday morning's qualifying on a rain-soaked track. He had the 12th best time and also received an additional five-place penalty after making a sixth engine change in his Red Bull car, which is more than allowed in a season.
It didn't matter. Despite the starting position, rain during large parts of the race, and red flags, Verstappen worked his way up through the field. He won the race ahead of the French duo Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly, both Alpine Renault.
I knew it would be a tough race, but we stayed out of trouble, stayed calm, and we flew forward, says Verstappen in Viaplay's broadcast.
The qualifying had been postponed from Saturday due to bad weather in the Brazilian metropolis. Lando Norris, who won Saturday's sprint, was the fastest in qualifying and got to start in pole position, but had to settle for sixth place in Brazil's GP.
