The weather in Azerbaijan did not give the F1 qualifying the best conditions on Saturday.
Oscar Piastri, who leads the overall standings, crashed into a barrier in pursuit of first place and it was one of several crashes during the race. Charles Leclerc also crashed.
The red flag had to be waved on six occasions, a record number for a qualifying session. The race took an hour longer than scheduled.
In the end, the reigning champion Max Verstappen took pole position, followed by Carlos Sainz and Liam Lawson.
