After a near flawless race, Verstappen crossed the finish line a full 20 seconds ahead of McLaren driver Lando Norris, who had a poor start to the race. Just 2.8 seconds later, Mercedes driver George Russell rolled across the finish line on the final lap.
After the race, it was announced that McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri would be disqualified from the race in Las Vegas, as their cars did not meet the technical regulations after the race – the cars were too low.
"It's frustrating to lose so many points," Norris said, according to AFP.
McLaren team principal Andrea Stella apologizes to the drivers for the dishwashing.
"We apologize to Lando and Oscar for the points lost, at a crucial time in the season, after two strong performances over the weekend," he said, according to AFP.
With the points deduction, Mercedes driver George Russell took second place while Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli came third in the Formula 1 race in Las Vegas.
With two races remaining in the season, Lando Norris leads by 24 points ahead of Oscar Piastri and reigning world champion Max Verstappen. Norris can secure the world championship title in Qatar next weekend if he takes two points more than Verstappen and Piastri in the two races. The world championship series then concludes with a race in Abu Dhabi on December 7.
