Dutchman Verstappen was seventh going into the final corner of the first lap when he skidded his car, tried to stop it, but instead crashed straight into the barrier.
The four-time world champion quickly radioed his team that "I'm okay" and then got out of the car.
After the crash, the race was red-flagged and stopped while the track was cleared, forcing the drivers to return to the pits.
When the race resumed, Lando Norris was fastest. The Briton won ahead of Kimi Antonelli and George Russell.
Red Bull announced earlier this week that the team had extended Verstappen's contract by four years. The new deal runs until 2030.
