Dutchman Verstappen was seventh going into the final corner of the first lap when he skidded his car, tried to stop it, but instead crashed straight into the barrier.
The four-time world champion then got out of the car and announced to his team on the radio, "I'm okay."
After the crash, the race was red-flagged and stopped to clear the track, forcing the drivers to return to the pits.
Red Bull announced earlier this week that the team had extended Verstappen's contract. The new deal runs until 2030.
