Debuting actress Veronica Maggio may receive two awards, but the most nominations for the Guldbagge Gala go to Sweden's Oscar entry, "Eagles of the Republic". It feels incredibly big, says Veronica Maggio from the stage at Filmhuset.

She already has six Grammy Awards, Sweden's finest music awards, on her list of achievements. Now the artist can also be awarded Sweden's finest film award.

A message Veronica Maggio received "in shock".

I didn't really believe it, but I was very happy and moved, she tells TT.

Maggio made her acting debut in the romantic thriller "Seven Steps" and is nominated for both Best Leading Role and Best Screenplay - which she wrote together with the film's director Andreas Öhman.

It feels incredibly nice because Andreas and I have lived with this project and written this script and dreamed of doing this for so long.

She doesn't want to compare Grammys ("ego-boost") with Guldbaggers ("team sport"). But which Guldbagger would she have preferred to take home?

"Maybe best actor, just because I'm maybe not much of a team player," she says with a laugh.

Kept the pants.

The most likely winner of the awards at the gala is “Eagles of the Republic.” The political thriller could take home eleven Guldbaggers, including best film. Director Tarik Saleh and lead actor Fares Fares are also nominated.

"It's unbelievable, what a jackpot. I was sitting here counting on my fingers and when my fingers ran out I felt, wow, I'm hallucinating," says Tarek Saleh.

The acclaimed film is Sweden's Oscar entry. However, Saleh emphasizes the importance of the Swedish award.

This is Sweden, our homeland, and we are very proud to belong to the Swedish film industry.

Fares Fares says he has a habit of keeping something from every production. This time, the choice fell on the character George Fahmy's pants – which Fares is wearing to celebrate the day.

It's incredible that they still fit, because I weighed 23 kilos less then, he says.

Noobs exclamation mark

The other three films nominated for the award for best film are the science fiction thriller "Egghead Republic" and the sibling drama "Kevlar Soul" and "Live a Little", a drama about two girls whose train trip to Europe takes a terrible turn.

The Guldbagge jury almost completely rejects two of the most talked-about Swedish films of the autumn. Martina Haag's relationship drama "There's Something Wrong" and the drama-comedy "The Dance Club" by Lisa Langseth only receive one nomination each - in the supporting actor categories.

The Guldbagge Gala will be broadcast live from Cirkus in Stockholm on SVT on January 19.
