The American telecom giant Verizon will reduce its workforce by over 13,000 positions, the company itself says.

The cut is the largest ever for Verizon. The company also announced that 179 of its stores will be converted to franchise operations.

Last week, sources told the Wall Street Journal that about 15,000 jobs could disappear from the company. Verizon had about 100,000 employees in February, the newspaper writes.

In early October, Verizon replaced its CEO Hans Vestberg, who was previously CEO of Ericsson, with Dan Schulman, former CEO of Paypal.
