Despite an impressive comeback, veteran Venus Williams failed to go all the way in her singles comeback in the US Open – and was knocked out in the first round. The Czech Karolina Muchova won in the end with 6–3, 2–6, 6–1.

After the match, the 45-year-old American received standing ovations.

I do not think I have ever had an audience that supported me this much. I knew that people around the world and in the USA really cheered me on, and it felt fantastic, says Williams.

I did not win today, but I am very proud of my game.

Venus Williams, 45 years old and seven-time grand slam champion, entered this year's US Open via a wildcard and has not played in the tournament since 2023. She is the oldest player in the US Open since Renee Richards in 1981 – who was then 47 years old.
