It was no dream comeback for Venus Williams. The 45-year-old, who has not competed in over a year, was defeated by Polish Magdalena Frech in the second round of DC Open with set scores 6–2, 6–2 in favor of the 27-year-old.
After the loss, however, Williams received a standing ovation from the audience in the American capital.
I had so much fun, says Williams after the match.
The fans here are epic. I could not be happier about my first week back.
That Williams reached the second round of the tournament makes her the second oldest woman ever to win a singles match at WTA level.
