Earlier this weekend, US President Donald Trump announced that the country had reached an agreement with Venezuela for “majority American control” of at least 65 billion barrels of Venezuela’s oil reserves. Media outlets have since reported that the agreement will last for a hundred years.

Despite the Venezuelan government confirming an agreement with the United States, the country's interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, now says that Venezuela has not given up control of its oil.

"One thing must be absolutely clear: Venezuela retains ownership and sovereignty over its resources," Rodríguez said in a speech on state television.
