In a document, the government in Venezuela describes an "increasing threat" from the USA, which has sent warships to the Caribbean with the alleged purpose of combating narcotics trade.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Venezuela states in a statement that the USA's attacks in international waters – which have killed at least 21 people in recent weeks – threaten peace in the region.
The USA has struck against several boats near the coast of Venezuela recently. The US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth praised about a week ago an attack on a boat where four people were killed. He then claimed on X that the people on the boat "were transporting significant amounts of narcotics – with the destination USA to poison our people".
Venezuela's government has criticized the USA's actions in strong terms and has, among other things, accused the country of harassing fishermen and carrying out "extrajudicial murders".
The request for the meeting was made through a letter to Russia's UN ambassador, late on Thursday local time.
