Växjö relegated from Sweden’s top women’s football league after loss to Norrköping

Växjö desperately needed a win. But the team lost 1–0 to relegation rivals IFK Norrköping, sealing its relegation from Sweden’s top women’s football league. “It feels empty right now,” team captain Nellie Karlsson said on Viaplay’s broadcast.

Emma Engström scored for the visitors, sending Växjö down to the second tier next year.

For IFK Norrköping, the victory means they are safe going into the final round next Sunday. They are three points ahead of the major club Rosengård, which has 14 Swedish championship titles and is in the relegation playoff place.

In the final round, Rosengård will face mid-table Brommapojkarna away, while IFK Norrköping will host fourth-placed AIK.

It was already clear that Uppsala would be relegated from the women's Swedish league. The club has also announced that it will close its elite team operations after this season for financial reasons.
