The introduction of Millennium in the Västra Götaland Region (VGR) in November 2024 was paused after just three days, following technical problems and strong protests from healthcare staff.
Among other things, employees at Södra Älvsborg Hospital in Borås reported that words like "none" and "none" disappeared from X-ray results. At the same time, a health centre in Kinna switched to paper and pen instead of using Millennium.
It became clear relatively soon that the region would probably not proceed with the criticised system, even though major investments had already been made. Now it is completely clear that the agreement is being broken, the region announced in a press release.
The agreement with Oracle is expected to be signed on Friday, after the regional board backed the proposal.
“Creates security”
VGR is instead planning to build a new IT system based on different modules.
"We have reached an agreement that creates security and the ability to act going forward. It strengthens the conditions for patient-safe care and a sustainable work environment for our employees," says Regional Director Ann-Charlotte Järnström in the press release.
Extended contracts
At the same time, the agreements for the existing systems, several of which also come from Oracle, are being extended. According to the agreement, the American IT giant will continue to be responsible for developing and maintaining the systems.
According to VGR, this will lead to a cost increase of SEK 40 million per year.
"The negotiations have been about finding a comprehensive solution that both parties can accept and that gives VGR the best possible conditions to move forward after Millennium," says Ann-Charlotte Järnström.
