It was in connection with an overtaking maneuver that the van the man was traveling in veered off the road.
A large resource was called to the scene, including an ambulance helicopter, but the man was pronounced dead on the spot.
Another man, 45 years old, who was also traveling in the van, was taken to hospital by ambulance, but is not reported to have any life-threatening injuries.
The accident occurred at around 19:00 on Thursday.
The incident has prompted Peter Karlsson at the rescue service, who was the rescue leader at the operation, to lash out at the inadequate road maintenance.
It's so bad it's not true. They're out salting too late and we've had a number of accidents this week due to the slippery roads, he says to NWT.
Peter Karlsson cannot say, however, whether Thursday's fatal accident was due to the slippery roads.
But it's highly likely since it was so extremely slippery at the scene, he says.
