The scoring began in the 20th minute. Real goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois saw that Valverde had space on the right wing near the halfway line; his kick-out was perfect and Valverde advanced to score. Valverde poked the ball past one side of City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, ran around the other and made it 1-0.
Seven minutes later he made it 2-0, and in the 42nd minute he scored again, lifting the ball over City defender Marc Guehi and volleying in to make it 3-0.
Real then missed a penalty taken by Vinicius Junior at the start of the second half.
Despite that, Real has a big advantage ahead of the return leg in Manchester.
