Val Kilmer passed away on Tuesday due to complications from pneumonia, according to his daughter Mercedes Kilmer.

The actor was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014 but had recovered from the disease, his daughter reports.

Val Kilmer had a long list of notable roles throughout his career. Among his most famous performances are "Top Gun" from 1986, where he played opposite Tom Cruise. He also played the lead role in "Batman Forever", which premiered in 1995.

Played Jim Morrison

In Oliver Stone's film about "The Doors" in 1991, Kilmer portrayed the singer Jim Morrison, and he also played a thief opposite Robert De Niro and Al Pacino in the classic "Heat" from 1995.

Everything was different about this job than what I had experienced before, the actor told Entertainment Tonight in 1995 about the film "Batman Forever".

The size of the role figure and how strange it was that Michael Keaton had decided not to do it – I just said yes, without reading the script, writes The Hollywood Reporter.

Kept himself away

His film debut came in 1984 with the role of the American rock star Nick Rivers in the action comedy "Top Secret!". The year before, Kilmer had made his debut on Broadway.

In 2021, the documentary "Val" was released, a documentary about him based on decades of archival material. The film won several awards, including the Critics' Choice Award for Best Historical or Biographical Documentary.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in 2012, Kilmer stated that he had kept himself away from Hollywood for a decade to focus on other interests and spend time with his children.

He made his last role in 2022, when he again played opposite Tom Cruise in the sequel to "Top Gun".

Val Edward Kilmer was born in Los Angeles in 1959 and was of Swedish descent. His grandmother immigrated from Sweden and his mother's surname was Ekstedt.

Born in Los Angeles. Two children. Married between 1988 and 1996 to actress Joanne Whalley.
